The 1973 Chilean Coup

The coup in Chile on 11 September 1973 was a chilling example of counter revolution, backed by Western powers.

52 years later we are republishing some pieces from the archive which we think not only bring this history to life but illuminate crucial questions facing us today  .

Here we have 3 pieces presented together: a statement by the United Secretariat of the Fourth International  from 16 September 1973, a political resolution from the Central Committee of the Revolutionary Socialist Party, Chilean Section of the Fourth International  and an editorial prepared for the September 1973 issue of Revolucion Permanente which were first published in International, Volume Two, Number Two, Summer 1973. Key themes include the heroism of the Chilean working class and the  suicidal danger of beliving a transition to socialism is possible without preparing to destroy the actually existing state.

Our second piece is from the Liga Communiste De Chile, sympathising section of the Fourth International which held an underground conference in Chile after the coup. We present a translation of sections of the main perspectives document discussed at there. Key elements include a characterization of the Pinochet regime as military fascism and an exploration of the debate on ‘consitutionalism’ around  the army. It was first published in English in International, Winter/Spring 1975.

The final article is a debate between Livio Maitan a key leader of the Fourth International from Italy and the Italian Marxist philosopher Lucio Colleti reflecting again on the same issues as the other pieces, but this time illustrating the impact and importance on debates on the Chilean coup had across the international left.
