Green Party surge continues

Robin Bonner reports on the Green Party(England and Wales) recent conference in Bournemouth that took place from 3-5 October .

The Autumn 2025 Green Party conference was the largest in the Party’s history, with about 1,000 members attending it.

The atmosphere throughout the weekend was one of anticipation and unity, with delegates travelling from across the country to participate in debates, workshops, and networking sessions. Many attendees remarked on the sense of purpose and optimism that permeated the event, reflecting the Party’s growing influence and commitment to progressive change.

There were 5 plenaries for Speeches by Zack Polanski, Anthony Slaughter (leader for Wales), Mothin Ali and Rachel Millward (Deputy Leaders), Harriet Lamb (CEO) and the Global Majority leaders.  All were very moving with personal anecdotes, as well very energising and appealing to socialists (despite the word never being mentioned).  The members often stood up and clapped at these speeches with great enthusiasm.

Main themes addressed

  • tackle the climate crisis and inequality
  •  wealth tax on the assets of the superrich
  • re-nationalisation of the privatised utilities – especially water
  • need for rapidly developing more sustainable clean energy and achieving net-zero targets
  • discourage travelling by car, and expand electrified public transport and dedicated cycle ways
  • asylum seekers and other migrants are welcome here!

The Conference also had 5 plenaries for voting on motions in the 268-page Final Agenda available at the start of the Conference.  Following a brief presentation and a chance for a few members to argue for and against the motion and amendments, each was voted on by a show of hands.

The Policy Motions included the following:

  • Electrification and expansion of railways – with East West Railway Line as soon as possible
  • New deals for carers
  • Trans non-binary identities and rights
  • Abolish landlords
  • Solidarity with Gaza & Palestinian People – incorporating amendment that includes the Israeli Defence Force being proscribed as a terrorist agency
  • Global Climate and Ecological Emergency
  • Climate Strategy
  • Abolish City Airport
  • Make big business refundin-work benefits claimed by staff.

Many grass roots meetings

Between the plenaries there were 43 meetings with about 8 taking place simultaneously in each time slot.  So members sometimes had the difficult choice of having to decide which one to go to.  Some were for specific groups such as the global majority, women, feminists, LGPTQ, trade unions, humanists, Jews, Muslims, young greens and the Green Left.  There were also meetings on specific themes and policies such as Climate Emergency, Pollution, Attacks on Protests, Housing, Beating Reform and racism, Peace and Security, International law & Palestine, Asylum and Migration.

During one of the lunch breaks, a few hundred Green Party members went to the beach by the conference centre to create a long red line using wide red ribbon to demonstrate their opposition to Israel’s Genocide in Gaza.

This year the Green Party has started to  grow very rapidly.  In December 2024 it had 58,000 members.  When Zack Polanski was elected on 28 September, the total number of members was 64,500.  At the Conference it was announced that the Party had reached 80,000 members.  9 days later, on the 14th October the membership has increased by another 25,000 members to 105,000 members!    That is over a 50% increase in a month.  “It puts them on a potential course to overtake the Conservatives” states Peter Walker in the Guardian on 12 Oct 2025.

Green Party advances, Labour declines

In comparison, the largest Party in the UK, the Labour Party, had 309,000 members in February 2025.  They have not made public the size of their membership since then.  Probably because it has fallen significantly and judging from the Green Party speakers who absentmindedly introduced themselves as being from [x place] Labour Party, there are quite a few ex-Labour Party members now in the Green Party.

The Green Party has 4 MPs, 2 Life Peers, 872 Councillors and 3 London Assembly Members.

There are two left wing groups within the Green Party – the Green Left and Green Organise.  They are both officially recognised by the Green Party.  Most of Green Left members are also members of Green Organise.  They are committed to Ecosocialism and came to the demonstrations with their own banners and Ecosocialist pamphlet.

The Green Party, as a whole, has as its main priorities tackling Climate Emergency, sustainability and inequality.   However, so far, it remains a reformist party which is focused on elections on the expectation that the Party will be able to gain sufficient MPs to form or join a government and implement its radical policies.  It nevertheless combines this electoral activity with growing participation in demonstrations, protests and active support for trade unions and workers’ strikes.
